Our Commitment
We are reviving the free open source IdentityServer4 project, it will be known as Open.IdentityServer
Our goal is simple:
to ensure there is plenty of choice for a high-quality, free & open, identity platform available to the .NET community.
Identity is foundational infrastructure. We believe the core of identity can be provided as community-driven free, open-source software forever
Our Philosophy
We believe in a sustainable, free, open-source model built on balance:
- The core platform will always be free and open-source
- Commercial offerings will remain optional and finance the free core
- The community will always have a voice in the direction of the project
This is not a short-term initiative. We are here to invest in it, grow it, and protect it.
A Sustainable Open-Source Model
To ensure long-term viability, we are adopting a model that has proven successful in other free, open-source projects, some of which we support through contributions and funding.
Free Core
The core IdentityServer platform will remain:
- Open-source
- Freely available
- Production ready
Optional Commercial Add-ons
We offer paid, optional enhancements for those who need them, such as:
- AdminUI for managing users and configuration
- SAML for SP and IDP, to allow integration into ecosystems using SAML
- WS-FED to integrate with applications such as SharePoint
- Dynamic Authentication providers to allow federation without restart
- SCIM, to support application resource provisioning
- Enforcer an ABAC Policy Engine, fine-grained access control
- Enterprise support packages include an expert team on hand to keep your SSO solution fully up to date and patched.
The core OAuth protocol support will remain free forever.
These offerings allow organisations to support the project while receiving additional value, without restricting access and adoption of the core platform.
Community & Collaboration
We will continue to build the features we feel the platform needs, but we recognise that great open-source software is not built in isolation.
We will:
- Encourage contributions from the community
- Maintain transparency in our roadmap and decisions
- Welcome feedback, discussion, and participation
We welcome sponsored development, where organisations can fund specific features.
Sponsors will be publicly acknowledged for their contributions to the ecosystem. Showcasing community collaboration.
Our Experience
We are not new to this space.
- Spent over 10 years developing solutions and products within the IdentityServer ecosystem
- Released our first commercial product for IdentityServer4 AdminUI in March 2018
- Developed and supported multiple production systems using IdentityServer
- Supported customers at scale, in excess of 20 million users
We are therefore uniquely positioned to continue its development responsibly and sustainably. We are committed to ensuring that:
- The platform evolves with modern requirements
- Our products and services remain compatible with Open.IdentityServer, OpenIddict and Duende
- The ecosystem continues to thrive
Our Values
As a BCorp organisation, we believe technology should serve people, not just profit. We have supported and contributed to other mainstream open-source projects such as:
- Umbraco
- OpenIddict
Reviving IdentityServer is a natural extension of those values.
A Promise to the Community
We make this commitment:
- The core will remain free
- The project will remain open
- The community will remain central
- The future will never require a commercial license
A Long-Term Home
We are here for the long term. Rock Solid Knowledge was purchased by Jonas Software in November 2024. Jonas Software is a buy-and-hold organisation forever; this project will never fall into the hands of another organisation with different priorities, thus providing a safe home for all our collective efforts.
