When we launched the Supporter License, we wanted to create more than a commercial bundle. It is a practical way for organisations to declare their support for the long-term future of free, open-source identity infrastructure while also receiving clear, immediate value in return.
Open.IdentityServer exists because we believe the .NET community should continue to have access to a high-quality, production-ready identity platform that is free, open, standards-based, and sustainable. Open source does not maintain itself. It needs long-term investment, active development, security awareness, documentation, support, and a passionate and committed team that can keep moving the platform forward.
Why we introduced the Supporter License
The Supporter License was introduced to help balance two important goals:
- Keeping the core Open.IdentityServer platform free and open
- Providing customers with a simple way to access a wider ecosystem of valuable commercial components that enhance your identity solutions
Many organisations want to support open source because they benefit from it every day to deliver, in some cases, critical systems. The Supporter License gives those organisations a direct and meaningful way to contribute to the ongoing development of Open.IdentityServer without requiring them to sponsor development on an ad hoc basis.
One subscription, every component
The Supporter License gives you access to the full IdentityServer.com product library through a single annual subscription, with the side effect of supporting free open-source. Instead of buying and renewing multiple product licences separately, you can simplify procurement and gain access to the components you need now, as well as future eligible products as they become available.
What you receive
With the Supporter License, you receive access to components designed to solve common real-world identity challenges, including:
- AdminUI for managing IdentityServer users and configuration
- SAML2P for SAML identity provider and service provider scenarios
- WS-Federation for integrating with legacy and Microsoft ecosystem applications
- SCIM for identity provisioning and automation
- Dynamic Authentication Providers for changing external provider configuration at runtime
- Key Rotation for automated signing key lifecycle management
- Passkeys for phishing-resistant, passwordless authentication
- Enforcer for policy-based access control and fine-grained authorisation
- Future eligible products as the IdentityServer.com ecosystem continues to grow
With your permission, we will advertise you as a supporter on the project's GitHub site.
Supporting a sustainable open-source model
We are committed to keeping the core identity platform free and open source. That commitment has more credibility if it's backed by a sustainable model. The Supporter License is just one of the ways we fund the work required to maintain, improve, secure, document, and grow Open.IdentityServer over time.
This returns to our IdentityServer4 roots and aligns closely with our BCorp values. The approach keeps the core platform accessible to everyone while allowing organisations that need additional capabilities to support the project. It is a model built on choice: developers can adopt the free core, customers can purchase the components they need, and supporters can access the complete product set while helping protect the future of open identity for the wider community.
A better way to fund open-source
Open-source is strongest when the community that uses it and the organisations that depend on it commercially have a healthy relationship. The Supporter License reflects that relationship. It allows businesses to recognise the value they receive from open-source and contribute to the project's long-term health, while also receiving products that help them deliver better identity solutions.
